What is interesting honeysuckle?
Honeysuckle is the beloved berry of residents of the CIS countries. It ripens much earlier than raspberries, in terms of the number of nutrients it significantly exceeds it. Shrubs are grown not only for eating fresh fruits, but also for the decor of the garden. Gardeners love to grow honeysuckle, because it is unpretentious, and can grow in any climate.
The second feature of honeysuckle is its amazing healing properties. In fruits, a large amount of vitamin C, a number of trace elements important for the body. Berries have an antipyretic effect, so they must be eaten with flu.
Honeysuckle is one of the leading places in traditional medicine. Berries of a bush are used as an antimalarial, soaked agent. Fruits are an excellent antiseptic. The medicinal properties of the plant do not end there; you can prepare a large number of delicious dishes from honeysuckle, such as jams, jams and jellies.
Description of the variety of honeysuckle Amphora
The height of the bush reaches 1.5 m. Foliage forms a round crown, an abundant amount of green mass. Skeletal branches have a burgundy color. Smaller shoots grow from them. Foliage of this variety in the form of an oval, slightly elongated, green, has an uneven surface, slightly densified.
The berries are large, about 20 mm long, in the shape of a water lily. The mass of one is about 1.3 g. The maximum weight of the honeysuckle is 3 g. The fruits are blue or blue in color, have a small wax layer. Sweet and sour, there is a note of bitterness. The peel is resilient, so the portability is high. About 2 kg of crop can be collected from one plant.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
Culture has both pros and cons, although some gardeners believe that Amphora has no shortcomings. Let's consider everything in order.
The advantages of the variety of honeysuckle Amphora:
- the berries are large in size, the taste is characteristic of the culture;
- the scope is universal, fresh fruits can be consumed, and various preservation can be prepared;
- cold resistance - the variety can be grown even in the most remote corners of the country;
- characteristic repeated flowering - accordingly, the crop can be obtained several times in one season;
- the fruits during full ripening do not crumble, hold fast to the branches.
The disadvantages of the variety of honeysuckle Amphora:
- pollinators are needed - the bush cannot pollinate independently;
- other varieties and crops need to be planted next to the plant.
Variety Characteristics
The homeland of this variety is St. Petersburg. Ancestor - Kamchatka honeysuckle. 1998 is the year when the plant was officially recorded in the State Register for Selection and Gardening in the Russian Federation.
The first crop of Amphora honeysuckle can be tasted in the 3rd year after planting. Berries ripen in late June; they do not fall for a long period of time. The variety is distinguished by its large fruits and cold resistance.

Pollinators
The Amphora variety is a self-infertile plant, so other varieties must be planted next to it. The best pollinators for this honeysuckle are:
- Violet;
- Gzhelka;
- Viola;
- Moraine;
- Bazhovskaya.
Shrubs are planted after 1.5-2 m from each other, they must be placed in the same row or group.
Features of fruiting
One healthy bush brings about 1.5-2 kg of wholesome fruits. It all depends on the climate in which honeysuckle grows and the quality of care for the bush. There are times when the fruits appear in the 1st year after planting - these are signal berries.
The bush can bring a full-fledged crop only in the 3rd year after planting. The berries of the shrub are firmly attached to the branches, so when harvesting you will have to try to remove them. Fruits perfectly tolerate transportation.
In the suburbs, the plant brings the crop at the beginning of summer, in cold regions - the fruits ripen in the middle or end of June. But still, this happens before the full ripening of strawberries or raspberries. With good care, the shrub can live for about 30 years, productivity does not change over the years, berries do not become smaller.
Plants bearing berries for over 80 years in a row have been documented.
The berries of honeysuckle are unique, they produce excellent jam with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Fruits can be frozen and prepared nutritious jam.
How to Grow Honeysuckle Amphora
The shrub awakens very early in the spring, so planting must be done in the fall. The exception is the southern regions, where you can plant a plant until mid-spring.
A shrub with a closed root system is planted only in the spring season.
Choosing a place and soil
In order for the plant to fully grow and develop, special attention should be paid to the location of the shrub and the choice of soil. Honeysuckle Amphora loves sunny areas with a slight shadow - this is if Amphora is grown to produce berries.
Honeysuckle is also planted in the shade, but it most likely will not bloom, and will remain as a decor of the garden plot. The plant can be placed in an open area, the shrub is not afraid of strong winds, but the amount of yield can be significantly reduced.
Honeysuckle Amphora loves moisture, but you should not choose a site with closely lying groundwater. It is also worth abandoning the territory where rain or melt water flows. Honeysuckle is not planted in the lowlands.
Light soil with a slightly acidic or neutral reaction is suitable for the plant. On heavy soils, a mixture of equal parts of nutrient soil, humus and river sand is placed in the pit. Gardeners recommend planting a plant near the apple tree, as they consider this fruit tree to be an excellent neighbor for Amphora.
We recommend reading an article on how to care for honeysuckle in the autumn.
Landing pattern
For a fruitful shrub, you should choose a two or three year old seedling, the diameter of the roots should be about 15-20 cm, not more. In the selected area, a recess for planting is prepared in 7 days.
Amphora honeysuckle landing algorithm:
- Prepare a pit measuring 0.3x0.3x0.3 m.
- Place a layer of pebble or ceramic drainage on the bottom; it should not be less than 0.1 m.
- Mix the soil with humus, 1 liter of wood ash, 60 g of potassium sulfate and 150 g of superphosphate.
- Before planting, water the recess, pour a small tuber of nutrient soil, carefully spread the roots of the plant on it.
- Fill the hole, deepen the root neck by 30 mm.
- Tamp the ground around the root circle and pour the seedling with not cold, defended water.
- Mulch the soil with grass, sawdust or peat.
Do not do post-planting pruning of honeysuckle so that the plant does not weaken and die.
Care
The honeysuckle shrub is not particularly demanding for care, however, a large crop will bring only when the plant begins to pay due attention. The soil is loosened up to 50 mm, the main thing during this procedure is not to damage the roots of the plant, weeds are pulled out, since pests can settle on them.
Five-year-old plants release the root system closer to the surface of the soil, so from this age, care should be much more accurate and lean.
Watering
In the south, the plant should be watered every 2 days. In the middle lane, the application of moisture is not particularly different, it is necessary to carry it out during the formation of the ovaries and before direct bearing. In order for the plant to be saturated with plenty of water, it should be watered after harvesting the fruits.
Basic rules for watering honeysuckle Amphora:
- Make a groove along the line of the crown of the bush, its depth should be about 100 mm, fill with water.
- During watering, do not soak the ground, but make it moist and crumbly.
- On dry days, the plant is watered in the morning and evening by sprinkling using special nozzles. Leaves should not dry.
Top dressing
In the 3rd year of the life of the honeysuckle, the plant begins to produce crops, therefore additional fertilizer to the bush is necessary.
Rules for applying dressing:
- In early spring, use a gardening event called mulching. Take compost and humus for this.
- Before flowering, feed the ovaries with mullein substance in a proportion of 1 part means and 10 parts water.
- In August, add natural fertilizer with potassium under honeysuckle: 0.5 l of wood ash and 10 l of water.
- Spring dressing option: 10 l of water and 20 g of urea.
- After harvesting, use this fertilizer: 10 g of urea, 20 g of ammonium nitrate, 60 g of superphosphate, 1 bucket of water.
- At the end of August, dilute in 10 l of water 30 g of superphosphate and 20 g of potassium sulfate.
If the site has high acidity, then the honeysuckle is constantly watered with water with diluted ash (volume 0.5 l).
Pruning
Recently planted seedlings are pruned only from dry and diseased branches. After 7 years of development of the shrub, pruning is performed to help get rid of excess green mass. Old and thickening branches are removed, about 10 pieces should remain of developed branches.
Anti-aging pruning occurs at the age of 15 years, during this period almost all branches are removed. The main task of this procedure is to leave the strongest shoots that can bring a rich harvest. Anti-aging pruning takes place again after 10 years.
Breeding
This honeysuckle variety is propagated by layering, bending the lower branch in the dug hole in the spring season. Its top should be left on the surface, the shoot watered, the resulting sprouts transplanted in the fall or next spring.
Also, the plant can be divided, for this use a sharp shovel. Another option is allowed - the use of spring cuttings for propagation of honeysuckle Amphora.
Protection against diseases and pests
Fungal diseases attack the plant, but only in rainy summers. The most dangerous diseases are peronoporosis and rust. In order to prevent their occurrence, it is necessary to carry out preventive measures at the beginning of spring.
Means for the prevention of fungal diseases:
- The drug Actellic or Rogor (0.2%).
- In summer, use chemicals Skor, Flint or Topaz.
- The preparations Epin and Zircon are bred according to the instructions.
Young shoots are sometimes attacked by pests such as aphids, whiteflies and scale insects.
Means for the prevention and control of pests:
- Aphid is destroyed by tincture of hot pepper.
- Use drugs Iskra, Fitoverm and Actellik.
- Substances Gliokladin, Fitosporin and Gamair are used during active fruiting of the plant.
Winter preparations
Amphora honeysuckle can be grown in any region of the country. The variety tolerates frost and cold. More vulnerable seedlings should be hidden for the winter under cover material. To do this, it is better to use agrofiber. They can also be sprinkled with snow.
Amphora honeysuckle reviews
Alina, 44 years old, economist, Barnaul.Amphora honeysuckle variety attracted me due to its resistance to frost. It brings a lot of harvest, the berries of the honeysuckle are large, although sour in taste. I don’t really like them fresh, because bitterness is strongly felt, but the jam is excellent.
