Watering sorrel is a mandatory procedure for cultivating a crop, since the plant does not belong to the drought tolerant class, it does not tolerate excessively hot weather. Sorrel will not die without enough water, but its taste and leaf structure will deteriorate - they will be tough, tasteless and small. And after cutting the green mass, young leaves do not grow back.
When to start watering?
Seed material can be sown at any time - starting from early spring and ending in July, but for rapid growth and increased yield, proper irrigation is required. It is recommended to sow seeds in a well-moistened soil, so a sufficient amount of water is introduced before planting.
The first watering is carried out 2-4 days after planting, depending on weather conditions. Before the first shoots appear, the procedure is carried out in a day or two, but not less often. Otherwise, the seed material hatch longer.
If planting is done in early spring, when there is still a lot of melt water in the garden, the frequency of watering is reduced.
Features and regularity of soil moisture
Depending on the climatic conditions of a particular region, the norms of soil moisture for growing sorrel are changing. It is easy to check the need for watering - there should be no dry and cracked crust on the surface of the earth.
But there is another method - dig a layer of soil 5 cm. If the soil is dry, then moistening is required.
Primary requirements:
- Water should be warm, not cold, because from the latter, the plant stops the growth of green mass or dies.
- It is watered from a watering can with a sprayer, preventing the liquid from getting on the foliage (it will begin to become covered with mold spots and decay, since the greens are quite tender).
- Rainwater is suitable for humidification, but you can also use tap water (always defended). To do this, collect the liquid in a large container, leave it for 2-3 days, then bring it directly under the root system.
- The best time for the procedure is in the early morning or evening, when there is no heat.
- To prevent moisture from evaporating, experts recommend mulching. Peat, weeds, foliage, straw and any other natural material are used as mulch. It is laid out in the aisle immediately after watering the sorrel with a layer of 1-3 cm (depending on the level of aridity of the climate).
- Overmoistening should not be allowed, in which the water in the garden stagnates. This leads to rotting of the roots, the development of fungal diseases.
- The average frequency of watering for oxal culture is 1 time in 4-7 days.
The rate of water depends on the period and climate conditions, weather. Immediately after sowing seeds, you have to make more water than after foliage formation. In this case, the amount of liquid decreases gradually.
When do sorrel watering stop?
Since sorrel is planted even in summer, its collection can be carried out until the first frost, but it is advisable to stop watering 1-2 weeks before the last harvest.
If you want to get seed, then stop hydrating earlier, as drought contributes to the release of peduncles.
If you water the sorrel in accordance with the main rules, you can not only increase productivity, but also get quite tasty, juicy foliage. Be sure to pay attention to the weather - if it rains, reduce the amount and frequency of moisture.
